Get Started Betting on Season Win Totals

NFL & college football season win totals have come to be more and more popular to the betting public over the last few years. Like a lot of prop bets. Season win totals were thought to be a sucker bet for small time players. However, many serious bettors are taking advantage of a little research to make money.

Lets start with the fundamentals of futures betting. Always remember that you are betting against other gamblers perception of how good a team is and not how many wins the sportsbook manager thinks a team will win. Look at the history of the team and you will get a good idea of how most sports gamblers think the team will do. Most people will bet on how good a team was last year. Not how good it is this year.

What is your bankroll?

This is one of the harder aspects of betting on football season win totals. Your money will be tied up until the season is over. Yes, you may have bet the Rams to win more than 4 games and they have won their first 5. However, the sportsbook will not pay until the season is over so that “win” is locked.

What is a Football Season Win Total Bet?

Lets take a step back here and make sure you know what a season win total bet is. One of the easier bets to understand. You are just betting on the total number of regular season wins a team will have in a season. The win total is usually set with a half game to avoid ties. It is a little disappointing to lock up money for an entire NFL season just to get a push in the end.

Example: Oakland Raiders 8..5 at (over -120)/(under 100)

Most season win totals will start out with both the over and under at -110. As money is bet on one side the odds will adjust. In the Oakland Raiders example; if a lot of money is bet on the Raiders to go over 8.5 wins. The odds will adjust and you will need to bet more money to win the same amount. At -110 you would need to bet $110 to win $100. At -120 you will need to bet $120 to win $100. Looking at the odds (-120) is a quick way to see which way the betting has gone so far.

Because football betting is getting more and more popular. There can be big odds movement on teams. It is not unusual to see teams at -140 or -175. The sportsbooks prefer to move the odds instead of the line (8.5).

Don’t assume the public is right. Just because the over may be -150 does not mean it is a lock. In fact, if you like the other side this is a chance to make some good money. Because, as one side is bet the other side becomes more valuable. If the over is -150 then the under may be +120 to get more action from the sportsbooks on that side. If you like the under do not be deterred by other people.

Three Keys to Football Futures Betting

Look at the Schedule

Always look at the schedule before making a bet. Sometimes a team will get a soft schedule and play games against a weak division. Other times they will go against the best division in football. Are they playing tough games on the road?

Look at the Quarterbacks

Of course you will look at your teams quarterbacks before betting on the win total. However, I am talking about the opposition teams quarterback. Is he a rookie? Are they going against a rookie early in the season when he will be likely to make mistakes? Does the other team have depth at quarterback so they can overcome an injury?

Coaching Changes

A new head coach is obvious. Some head coaches have a good or bad reputation and that will move the expected win total. But, do not overlook the offensive and defensive coordinators. A team that had a poor offense last season can make a quick turnaround with a good offensive coordinator.
