British Columbia Lions

Odds to win Grey Cup +500

Season win total from Bovada: 11, Over (-115), Under (-115)

The BC Lions won 12 games last season with a first-year starter. Jonathon Jennings’ second season as a starter will put the Lions back at the top of the mountain in the Canadian Football League, allowing Wally Buono to potentially walk away as a champion like it appeared he did in 2011.

The Lions have lost some big pieces like Jovan Olafioye, Adam Bighill and Alex Bazzie, but Buono has never had a problem finding young talent to replace pieces along the way. The Lions haven’t missed the playoffs since Buono joined the team 14 years ago.

The Lions’ season boils down to one simple question. Are they good enough to beat Calgary? They have a lot of pieces and Buono believes his team is bigger, faster, more physical and deeper. BC should good to for at least 12 wins in the regular season.

Prediction: Over 11

Calgary Stampeders

Odds to win Grey Cup +350

Season win total from Bovada: 12.5, Over (-125), Under (-105)

The Calgary Stampeders haven’t lost more than four games in four straight seasons.. A 15-2-1 record last year nearly tied a record for best season ever.

The Stampeders should win the Grey Cup. However, they should have won it last year. The Stampeders brought most of last year’s team which had both the best offence and best defense in the league.

This is a veteran team but, replicating last year’s 15-2-1 record will be not happen. The Stampeders will face a tough time in the West and I have them finishing just under 12.5 wins.

Prediction: Under 12.5

Winnipeg Blue Bombers

Odds to win Grey Cup +800

Season win total from Bovada: 8, Over (-125), Under (-105)

After four years of below .500 records and out of the playoffs, the Bombers finally changed their fortunes and it all started when they made the move to Matt Nichols at quarterback. Nichols ran a very efficient offence.

But you can’t ignore what the defence was doing last season. That unit allowed a bunch of yards but also turned over the ball at an extremely high rate. A plus 29 in the giveaway/takeaway category was by far the best in the CFL.

With most of the key pieces still in place, there’s no reason to believe the Bombers won’t be as good as last year. They’re not quite ready to overtake Calgary for first in the West Division but second is a real possibility with an 11-7 record. They will win need to find a way to beat the Stampeders (they went 0-3 last season).

Prediction: Over 8

Edmonton Eskimos

Odds to win Grey Cup +550

Season win total from Bovada: 10, Over (-115), Under (-115)

The road to the Grey Cup is expected to run through Calgary. Not what you want to hear when you are in the same division with odds on favorite to win it all. Edmonton has top talent and depth at quarterback in Reilly and James Franklin. They also have one of the best defensive front fours in the CFL. The big question on this team is the lack of depth. The Eskimos are a couple of injuries away from taking a real drop off in wins. Add that to the new management and I see this as a team that will take a step back this year.

Prediction: Under 10

Hamilton Tiger Cats

Odds to win Grey Cup +700

Season win total from Bovada: 8.5, Over (-140), Under (110)

Hamilton will contend for the top seed in the East and have a real shot at a 10-win season. There are all-stars on both sides of the ball. They just need to staying healthy. The first person who needs to stay healthy is Zach Collaros. He has yet to play a full season. He had flashes of brilliance last year but the Tiger Cats offense sputtered in a loss to Edmonton in the Eastern Semi-Final.

The Tiger Cats are legitimate Grey Cup contenders. Can they stay healthy? I am betting they will be healthy enough to win at least 9 games.

Prediction: Over 8.5

Ottawa Redblacks

Odds to win Grey Cup +700

Season win total from Bovada: 9.5, Over (-115), Under (-115)

What about the 2016 Grey Cup Champion Ottawa Redblacks? They had a 8-9-1 record going into the playoffs that actually put them fifth in the overall standings in the CFL. Now take away the starting quarterback and some star receivers. Not a recipe for repeating.

The Ottawa offence will be dynamic with the return of running back William Powell, who missed all of the 2016 season. However, the rest of the Eastern Division has gotten a little better and luck has a way of equaling out.

Prediction: Under 9.5

Montreal Aloutettes

Odds to win Grey Cup +750

Season win total from Bovada: 8.5, Over (100), Under (-130)

The Montreal Alouettes offense will be improved from last year as they now have some stability at the quarterback position with Ernest Jackson. However, defensively, they will be a little worse off. If they remain healthy, this team could have a chance to finish as high as second in the division. But, should Durant suffer a serious injury, the season will be over.

The defense is not as good as last year and I just do not trust this team to do well with the lack of depth. I can see a real collapse taking place.

Prediction: Under 8.5

Toronto Argonauts

Odds to win Grey Cup +1200

Season win total from Bovada: 8.5, Over (105), Under (-135)

There are high expectations with the hiring Jim Popp and Marc Trestman. However, this isn’t Montreal. There is a real lack of talent on this team that won’t be turned around in a year. 2017 will be a transition year and by the end of the season the improvement will be obvious. That won’t be soon enough for the Argonauts to get to 9 wins but it will make the 2018 season something to look forward to.

Prediction: Under 8.5

Saskatchewan Rough Riders

Odds to win Grey Cup +800

Season win total from Bovada: 7.5, Over (-150), Under (120)

Poor Saskatchewan. They are in the wrong division and they have questions in the defensive backfield, running back and at quarterback. The Rough Riders will end their season early and win my under bet for me if they get off to another slow start. Over the last 2 season the Rough Riders are a combined 1-18 before Labor Day.

Prediction: Under 7.5
